DU program banking on need for restored wetlands at Eastern Iowa Outdoors

DU program banking on need for restored wetlands at Eastern Iowa Outdoors.

DU is working to create mitigation banks to be used when construction and other activities damage wetlands.  Federal law requires that all construction projects using federal dollars do not result in a net loss of wetland acres or function.  If that does occur then the wetland bank can be “bought” into by whoever does cause unavoidable damage.

McNaboe, an engineer with DU, is  establishing mitigation banks first in Montana, the Dakotas, Minnesota and Iowa.  The focus is on landowners who have legally drained wetland area that can be reverted back to its natural state.

The project is in its early stages.  Eventually all of the prairie regions will be explored to bring into the bank.
